TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Death row convict Mary Jane expressed her gratitude to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections after being officially handed over to the Philippines.
"I would like to thank the Honorable President Prabowo Subianto, the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Iza Mahendra and of course to all the people of Indonesia," said Mary in fluent Indonesian.
She expressed her happiness and sadness after 15 years of finally leaving Indonesia. "I am very happy today. But honestly there is also sadness because Indonesia has become my second family," she said.
Mary Jane's handover to the Philippine Government was represented by the Acting Deputy for Immigration and Corrections of the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections, I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram on Tuesday night, December 17, 2024.
Mary Jane Veloso will be sent to her country on Wednesday morning, December 18, 2024. The flight will be carried out at Terminal 2F of Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten. She was sent back to the Philippines using Cebu Pacific Airlines flight 5J760 at 00:05 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
Previously, Mary Jane was sent from LPP Pondok Bambu to Soekarno-Hatta Airport at 19:17 WIB. She wore a black shirt and left escorted by officers using a black van.
The Indonesian and Philippine governments previously agreed to return Mary, a death row convict for narcotics, to the Philippines before Christmas. The agreement was signed by Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra and the Deputy Minister of Justice of the Philippines, Raul T. Vasquez in Jakarta on Friday, December 6, 2024.
Mary Jane is a domestic worker who was arrested by Customs and Excise officers at Adisutjipto Airport, Yogyakarta, on April 25, 2010. She was found carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her suitcase. She was sentenced to death by the Sleman District Court.
