TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nine people have died in a flash flood that struck the Sitaro Islands Regency in North Sulawesi. The disaster occurred on Monday, January 5, 2026, at 02:30 Central Indonesian Time (WITA). The flood hit several districts, including East Siau, South East Siau, and West Siau.

The incident followed a long period of heavy rain in the area. Visual reports sent to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) showed that large rocks and thick mud flooded the streets. The debris spilled into residential buildings and damaged local homes.

Abdul Muhari, the BNPB spokesperson, stated that the flood has now receded. Field teams report that the immediate danger from the water has passed. "Nevertheless, the electricity and telecommunication networks in the affected areas are disrupted," Muhari said in a statement on Monday.

Initial data from the Sitaro Regency Disaster Management Agency shows a heavy toll. Nine people are confirmed dead, five are still missing, and 17 are injured. Currently, 102 people are taking refuge at the GMIST Bethbara building. "Five houses were reported lost or swept away. Other material losses are still being surveyed," he added.

The joint search and rescue (SAR) team is still working to evacuate residents. They are searching for the victims who remain missing under the mud and debris. Logistics and help are on the way, but transport is a challenge. "The main problem for moving resources is adjusting the ferry schedule to the Sitaro Islands," Muhari explained.
