TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After a series of eruptions at Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) that canceled multiple flights to and from Bali on Wednesday, several airlines resumed flights to Bali per Thursday, November 14, 2024.
Eighty-three international routes were canceled on Wednesday, the general manager of Bali's international airport said in a statement, after Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki spewed 9 kilometers high of volcanic ash into the sky.
The volcano has erupted more than a dozen times over the last two weeks, killing at least nine people and forcing the evacuation of thousands.
Among those resuming flights are Singapore Airlines (SIA) and budget carrier Scoot. SIA retimed flights to and from Bali, while two canceled flights continued to be unavailable today.
Meanwhile, Scoot confirmed that it had retimed two flights to and from Bali and Surabaya, as cited from CNA.
Qantas and Jetstar also resumed their services to Bali, Australia's Qantas Group said in a statement on Thursday, noting "improved" conditions. Two delayed Qantas flights are among those set to take off.
According to CNA, Qantas Group said that it will continue to monitor the changing conditions and Mount Lewotobi’s volcanic activity. The airline will also work on plans to operate more recovery flights.
AirAsia planned to resume some flights to and from Bali later today, the company said in a statement to AFP. Virgin Australia, which canceled its Wednesday flight to and from Denpasar, also resumed all scheduled flights today.
“We will continue to contact guests whose flights have been canceled to accommodate them on recovery flights in the coming days,” the airline wrote in a statement today.
“Our team is working diligently to rebook all impacted guests to their destinations as safely and promptly as possible.”
As of early Thursday morning, Bali's airport had recorded another 32 international flight cancellations, general manager Ahmad Syaugi Shahab said.
He added that volcanic ash from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki has been heading away from the airport since Wednesday evening. "We hope affected airline passengers can resume their travel on Thursday," Ahmad said, as quoted from CNA on November 14.
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted again overnight into Thursday morning, and a thick ash column and lava flows could be seen pouring from its crater, according to the volcanology agency.
