TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Floods and landslides have swept through West Sumatra, killing at least 12 residents, as reported by the Vice Governor of West Sumatra, Vasko Ruseimy.

In a virtual ministerial meeting this afternoon, November 27, 2025, Vasko mentioned that the local government agencies are attempting to evacuate the victims and clean up the disaster aftermath.

"Approximately 12,000 residents have been affected. Landslides swept through the road, trees fell in several districts and cities," Vasco said in a statement released by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) this evening.

Referring to BNPB data, high-velocity floodwater struck houses along the banks of the Minturun River. Tree trunks and mud also damaged houses in Lubuk Minturun, and a connecting bridge in Koto Luar, Pauh District, Padang City, was swept away by the current.

The BNPB Head of the Disaster Data and Information Center, Abdul Muhari, said the extreme weather disaster affected 17 villages in 7 districts in Padang City. "The local BPBD is still updating the disaster impact data until this evening," Abdul Muhari said in his statement.

Regarding this extreme weather, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had previously detected two tropical cyclones affecting the weather conditions in several regions of Indonesia. One of the weather anomalies was felt in West Sumatra. The two tropical cyclones detected are Tropical Cyclone Koto and Tropical Cyclone Senyar.

Tropical Cyclone Senyar made landfall in Aceh on Wednesday morning, which was considered a highly unusual event. In West Sumatra, this storm was expected to trigger moderate to heavy rainfall, as well as high waves reaching 4 meters in the northern part of the Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean west of Aceh to the Nias Islands.
