TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that floods hit four villages in Dolok Masihul District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, North Sumatra, on Tuesday morning, January 7, 2025, at 03:30 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari said this incident was caused by the overflowing of the Sibarau River and the breach of the embankment at two points along 30 meters and 50 meters. "Water sent from the upstream area in Simalungun also worsened the situation," said Muhari in a written statement, Wednesday, January 8, 2024.

Based on information from the Serdang Bedagai Regency BPBD, said Muhari, 429 families were affected, with a total of 429 houses submerged and one house reported severely damaged. The affected villages are Bukit Cermin Hilir Village, Martebing Village, Bantan Village, and Aras Panjang Village. "Until now there have been no reports of casualties or evacuations," he said.

He said, BPBD Serdang Bedagai Regency continues to monitor conditions in the field and provide logistical assistance to affected communities. Another step is coordination with village officials, sub-district heads, and related agencies to support the handling and recovery process.

"BNPB urges the public to remain vigilant against potential disasters due to extreme weather, stay away from risk areas such as embankments and riverbanks when high-intensity rain has been going on for a long duration, and prepare emergency supplies, such as important documents, food, and drinking water," he said.
