TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Public Works stated that several bridges were damaged due to floods and landslides in several areas of Sumatra. Disasters occurred in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra due to extreme weather over the past few days.
Deputy Minister of Public Works, Diana Kusumawati, provided information about the damage to bridge infrastructure following a coordination meeting at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) office in East Jakarta. "Currently, we are identifying four bridges that have been cut off," Diana said on Thursday, November 27, 2025.
She mentioned that floods and landslides caused damage to various infrastructure in the three affected provinces. However, Diana did not mention the locations of the cut-off bridges.
In addition, Diana mentioned that there are currently at least 20 landslide-prone areas in the city of Sibolga and Central Tapanuli Regency in North Sumatra. However, the number of landslide points could be higher. "We ourselves have not been able to identify because we have not been able to enter Sibolga," she said.
Meanwhile, in West Sumatra, Diana stated that the floods also caused water problems. The clean water facilities owned by the regional water company (PDAM) there suffered damage. "The (clean) water may not be able to function anymore. We are currently identifying all of it," Diana said.
According to Diana, her ministry has sent heavy equipment to clear the landslides. "Currently, we have also sent several heavy equipment to clear landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra," she said.
Extreme weather has caused floods and landslides in several cities and regencies in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh in recent days. The Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of BNPB, Abdul Muhari, stated that the heavy rains over the past two days caused flooding that damaged residents' homes in several areas.
The disaster dragged vehicles and other infrastructure along its path. "The water flow also brought materials such as mud, tree trunks, debris, and household waste," Abdul said in a written statement on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.
The floods and landslides also cut off road access to several regencies and cities. Electricity and communication networks in several areas were also disrupted due to this disaster.
