TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 29, 2025, repatriated the body of Basri, an Indonesian migrant worker (PMI) killed in a shooting incident by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in Malaysia. His body was returned to his family in Pulau Rupat, Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained in a statement that Basri's body arrived on Wednesday at 3:35 p.m. WIB, at Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru. The body was flown from Kuala Lumpur using flight AK429.
Upon arrival in Riau, the body was transported by land to Dumai Port and crossed by ferry to Pulau Rupat. The delivery was facilitated by representatives of the Ministry of Manpower Protection (KP2MI). The body was officially handed over from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the family and immediately buried on the same day.
Representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also met with the family members of one of the injured victims of the shooting by APMM, named MZ, who is still being treated at Serdang Hospital, Malaysia. The family received an explanation regarding MZ's condition.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur ensured that they will continue to monitor the condition of the four other migrant workers who are still undergoing treatment.
Previously, on January 24, 2025, around 03:00 local time, the authorities of Malaysia, APMM, fired upon a boat in the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor while patrolling. The shooting occurred after the boat passengers were accused of resistance. This incident resulted in the death of one Indonesian migrant worker and injuries to four others.
The Ministry of Manpower Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (KP2MI) strongly condemned the shooting incident by APMM. According to Deputy Minister of P2MI Christina Aryani, APMM has used excessive force in dealing with Indonesian migrant workers.
