TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A man suspected of driving a car into a German Christmas market in an attack that killed at least five people and injured dozens more faces charges of murder and attempted murder, police said on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024, as reported by Reuters. Police have detained the man.
Police in the city of Magdeburg, where the attack took place on Friday, also reported scuffles at a far-right demonstration attended by about 2,100 people on Saturday night, while other residents joined a commemoration of the tragic event at the Christmas market.
The suspect is a 50-year-old man of Saudi origin who has lived in Germany for nearly two decades. A judge ordered the man, identified in German media as Taleb A., into pre-trial detention after prosecutors filed a five-count murder charge. He is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault, according to a police statement.
The dead were identified as a nine-year-old boy and four adult women, aged 52, 45, 75 and 67.
German authorities have not named the suspect, who has permanent residency in Germany. Media reports did not provide his full name in line with local privacy laws.
Police reported clashes at a protest attended by around 2,100 people on Saturday night, a day after the attack. The far-right described the gathering on the Telegram messaging app as a “demonstration against terror”.
Protesters wearing black balaclavas were seen holding large banners with the word “remigration”, a term popular among far-right supporters who are seeking mass deportations of migrants and people deemed not to be ethnically German.
The motive for Friday night’s attack remains unclear. Investigators are looking into the suspect’s criticism of the German government’s treatment of Saudi refugees, among other things. He is also a vocal critic of Islam and has voiced support for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on the social media platform X.
