TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Governor of Central Java, Ahmad Luthfi, responded to a protest demanding the resignation of Pati Regent Sudewo on Wednesday, August 13, 2025.
“Yes, ask them. The mechanism must go through the Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD),” Luthfi said after observing Free Health Checks at Diponegoro University on Wednesday.
Luthfi explained that the resignation of regional leaders follows a specific procedure, which involves the DPRD.
Earlier today, the Pati Community Alliance held a large protest in front of the Regent’s office to demand Sudewo’s resignation. The demonstration ended in chaos.
Luthfi said he appreciated the public’s demands. “I encourage expressing opinions in public, which is the right of every citizen as regulated by law, but it is not absolute,” he said.
He added that such actions should not be carried out in an anarchic manner, should not impose one’s will, must not disrupt public interests, and must comply with the law.
Luthfi also called on the Pati Regent and local Muspida officials to listen to the aspirations of the people while maintaining a conducive situation.
“A conducive situation is one of the factors that attracts investment. I believe we are capable of maintaining it because Central Java is known for mutual cooperation and a strong sense of community,” he said.
Sudewo came under pressure to resign after increasing rural and urban land and building taxes by 250 percent. Although the policy was revoked following strong public opposition, demonstrations continued to demand his resignation. As of the time of this report, the protest is still ongoing.
The Regent briefly addressed the crowd from inside a police armored vehicle, saying, “I apologize.” The statement was met with a barrage of objects thrown by the crowd, prompting him to retreat and leave the area.
