TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Greenpeace Indonesia is preparing to report an alleged act of intimidation against one of its senior campaigners, following what the organization described as a pattern of terror targeting critics of the government’s handling of a recent ecological disaster in Sumatra.
Greenpeace Indonesia head Leonard Simanjuntak said the organization has discussed next steps with Iqbal Damanik, its Climate and Energy Campaign Manager, after a threatening package was sent to Damanik’s residence on Tuesday morning, December 30, 2025.
The package contained chicken carcasses and a message reading: “Watch your words if you want to protect your family. Your mouth is your tiger.”
“Regarding the next steps, we are inclined to report this act of terror to the police,” Leonard said when contacted on Friday, January 2, 2026. He added that the report would be filed in the near future with the consent of Damanik and his family.
“From our discussions, Iqbal agrees, and we plan to submit a police report around next week,” he said.
Leonard said Greenpeace believes the intimidation is linked to Damanik’s work and public criticism of the government’s response to the Sumatra disaster that struck on November 25.
At the time, Damanik and other Greenpeace campaigners openly questioned official disaster management efforts.
According to Leonard, the criticisms were based on direct field findings and in-depth analysis, particularly regarding environmental degradation such as deforestation and large-scale land conversion, which Greenpeace says contributed to the disaster.
Similar threats have also been reported by other public figures, including musician Ramond Dony Adam, also known as DJ Donny; content creators Sherly Annavita and Virdian Aurelio; and actor Hamba Ramanda, known as Yama Carlos. Leonard said the similarities in the intimidation tactics suggest a coordinated attempt to silence critics.
“We see this as systematic terror against individuals who have spoken out about the government’s handling of the Sumatran disaster,” he said.
Leonard stressed that Greenpeace Indonesia strongly condemns acts of intimidation against civilians. Public criticism, he said, should be treated as a democratic expression rather than a threat.
“Freedom of speech is a constitutional right,” Leonard said, adding that such intimidation would not deter the organization.
“Greenpeace will continue to advocate for climate justice, human rights, and democracy.”
