Gunshots Reported Near Venezuela's Presidential Palace

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Gunshots were heard on Monday night local time near the presidential palace of Venezuela, according to eyewitnesses, a few days after the United States forces abducted President Nicolas Maduro, who was ousted in a U.S. military attack.

A source close to the government said the situation was under control, as reported by CNA on Tuesday, January 6, 2027.

An unknown drone flew over the Miraflores palace in central Caracas and security forces fired shots in response around 8 pm, the source said. This occurred just hours after Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro's deputy, was sworn in as interim president following his ouster.

A series of gunshots was heard, but not as intense as the dawn attack on Saturday that ousted Maduro, according to someone living five blocks from the palace, who said the incident lasted about a minute.

"The first thing that came to mind was to see if there were planes flying overhead but there were not. I just saw two red lights in the sky," said a resident living near the palace on the condition of anonymity.

"Everyone was looking out their windows to see if there was a plane, to see what was happening."

The Ministry of Communication did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A video uploaded on social media showed what appeared to be tracer bullets fired into the sky.

The video showed many security forces rushing to the palace after the gunfire was heard.

The detained Venezuelan leader, Nicolas Maduro, was taken to the Federal Courthouse in New York to face a judge, which was his first public appearance since the U.S. military aggression, as reported by The Hindustan Times.

Maduro's replacement, Delcy Rodriguez, has indicated her willingness to cooperate with the U.S. after being sworn in as president earlier.

Maduro, along with his wife Cilia Flores, was abducted by the U.S. forces on Saturday and taken to New York City, where he will face criminal charges. U.S. President Donald Trump announced that until a smooth transition of power occurs in the South American country, the U.S. will "run" Venezuela.

"We're going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,," he said.

In Maduro's absence, the Venezuelan Supreme Court ordered the country's Vice President, Delcy Rodriguez, to assume the position of interim president.

The decision stated that the court would further consider "determine the applicable legal framework to guarantee the continuity of the State, the administration of government, and the defence of sovereignty in the face of the forced absence of the President of the Republic."
