TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Receiving offers from various car brands and models, Ghazal, 38, grew increasingly confused. An employee at a plantation company based in South Jakarta, he planned to replace the minibus he had been using for nearly 10 years with a newer vehicle. He has visited numerous exhibitions and dealers, but Ghazal, who lives in Bogor, West Java, has yet to find the right car.

The idea of buying a hybrid car crossed Ghazal's mind when news spread about fuel shortages at several privately owned gas stations. He thought that with a vehicle powered by two energy sources, he would not have to worry about finding gasoline. Yet with his frequent travel, he felt more confident driving a conventional combustion engine car. "It seems the cost and maintenance of a hybrid car are more expensive," he said on November 20, 2025.

Many consumers share Ghazal's view. Secretary-General of the Association of Indonesian Automotive Manufacturers (Gaikindo), Kukuh Kumara, acknowledged that public understanding of electric vehicles, especially hybrids, remains unevenly distributed. "That may explain why the growth of hybrid car sales is not as strong as electric vehicles," he said.

Gaikindo's report shows that from January to October this year, overall electric car sales, including both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrids, have actually increased. Wholesale sales (factory to dealer) of BEVs reached 69,146 units, hitting the highest monthly figure in October at 13,867 units. During the same period, hybrid vehicle sales totaled 51,566 units.
