TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said Jakarta still holds the capital status despite the enactment of State Capital Law No. 3 of 2022. The minister said the capital city will officially be relocated after the president issues a presidential decree.
"The capital city remains in Jakarta. The IKN (Nusantara Capital City) Law mentioned that the state capital status will be transferred through the enactment of Presidential Decree,” said Tito at the DPR building complex on Monday, November 18, 2024.
Tito could not confirm when President Prabowo will issue the regulation. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas also echoed a similar sentiment, affirming that the prerequisite for a state capital is the presence of the offices of the three branches of government: the executive, legislative, and judiciary bodies.
"It’s emphasized that the judiciary, executive, and legislative bodies must be there (IKN). As long as the construction is unfinished, the capital city will stay in Jakarta,” said this Gerindra Party politician.
Supratman said Prabowo will issue the decree once the infrastructure in IKN is deemed able to support government services and operations. The current condition of IKN, he said, is not yet feasible to become a capital city.
Supratman added that the decision to relocate the capital city must align with the progress of the development of IKN. He mentioned that Prabowo is committed to continuing the new capital development.
"Pak Prabowo stated that he will continue IKN until 2029, and of course, the Presidential Decree on the relocation of the capital city will be inked once the infrastructure of the three branches of government has been established," he said.
