TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Transportation Ministry has announced that flight services in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) have returned to normal. Several airports, which had temporarily ceased operations due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki on Flores Island, have now reopened.

Budi Rahardjo, Head of the Transportation Ministry's Public Communication and Information Bureau, confirmed that Frans Sales Lega Ruteng Airport, H. Hasan Aroeboesman Ende Airport, Soa Bajawa Airport, Komodo Labuan Bajo Airport, Wunopito Lembata Airport, Gewayantana Larantuka Airport, Waingapu Airport, Sultan Muhammad Salahuddin Bima Airport, and Lede Kalumbang Tambolaka Airport are now operational.

“Only Fransiskus Xaverius Seda Airport in Maumere remains closed,” Budi said in an official statement on Monday, November 18, 2024.

Budi also said that flight services at the reopened airports have resumed normal operations. Komodo Airport, which experienced 12 domestic flight cancellations and two international flight cancellations on Friday, November 15, 2024, is now fully operational.

“Maritime conditions around the eruption area are also deemed safe,” Budi assured. “Waves, winds, currents, and visibility are suitable for maritime activities.”

From November 10 to 18, 2024, the Transportation Ministry recorded 5,282 passengers transported by 132 ships, primarily tourists. Despite the resumption of normal flight services, the Ministry has kept ships on standby for emergency situations.

“The KNP. Chundamani ship is currently anchored in Labuan Bajo for emergency purposes,” Budi explained.

Additionally, the Larantuka-Kupang ferry route transported 1,538 people, 74 motorbikes, 21 four-wheeled vehicles, and 33 six-wheeled vehicles between November 1 and 11, 2024. The Kupang-Larantuka route, operating from November 3 to 14, 2024, transported 1,798 people, 96 motorbikes, 30 four-wheeled vehicles, and 54 six-wheeled vehicles. Both routes were serviced by 5 ships.

As previously reported, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki's volcanic activity increased significantly on Sunday, November 3, 2024, and erupted on Monday, November 4, 2024. Its alert status was raised to Level IV (Warning) on the same day.

A subsequent eruption occurred on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, accompanied by thunderous sounds and lava flows extending 3.8 kilometers to the northeast and 3.9 kilometers to the west.

“Lava flows were also observed towards Padang Pasir Village, Klatanlo, and Boru Village,” stated Muhammad Wafid, Head of the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in a written statement on Wednesday, November 12, 2024.
