TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has ensured that all Indonesian citizens in Venezuela are safe amid the United States' attack on the South American country.
In its statement on Saturday, January 3, 2026, the ministry stated that the Indonesian Embassy in Caracas continues to monitor the developments and the condition of Indonesian citizens in Venezuela.
"At present, all Indonesian citizens in Venezuela are reported to be safe," Kemlu stated through the X platform, as quoted by Antara.
In addition to the Indonesian Embassy in Caracas, all Indonesian representatives in the South American region are also actively monitoring the conditions and safety of Indonesian citizens, said the ministry.
Indonesian citizens in Venezuela are urged to stay calm, be more vigilant, and keep in touch with the Indonesian Embassy.
The people of Venezuela were shocked by several powerful explosions in several areas of the country on early Saturday, amidst increased tensions with the U.S., local media reported.
Videos circulating on social media showed thick plumes of smoke in several locations in the capital of Caracas, accompanied by the sound of air raid sirens.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that his forces had launched a military attack on Venezuela and claimed that President Nicolas Maduro had been kidnapped and taken to the U.S.
The attack and kidnapping occurred after months of tension with the United States, which accused Venezuelan President Maduro of being involved in drug trafficking. Maduro denied the allegations.
Earlier this week, Trump also revealed the attack on the docks of Venezuelan drug ships last week, which was the first known attack in Venezuelan territory during the U.S. campaign.
The U.S. President has repeatedly threatened to launch a ground attack on drug cartels in Latin American regions, including Venezuela, which he referred to as "narco-terrorists."
He claimed, without providing evidence, that Maduro of Venezuela leads a drug trafficking organization aimed at undermining the U.S. by flooding it with drugs.
On Thursday, Maduro indicated that he was open to negotiating a deal with the U.S. to combat drug trafficking. The U.S. has carried out more than 20 air raids in the waters near Venezuela since September, along with the imposition of sanctions and increased military pressure on Caracas.
In the interview, Maduro also claimed that the U.S. was trying to overthrow his government and gain access to Venezuela's abundant oil reserves through months of sanctions and military pressure from Washington.
When directly asked whether he confirmed or denied the U.S. attack in Venezuelan territory, Maduro said, "This could be something we talk about in a few days."
Maduro stated that the Trump administration's approach made it clear that the U.S. was "seeking to impose itself" on Venezuela through "threats, intimidation, and violence."
