TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Embassy in Damascus repatriated a total of 37 Indonesian citizens from Syria. This first wave of evacuation is part of the effort to protect Indonesian citizens following the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad last Sunday.

"The evacuees departed on December 10 at 2 p.m. local time from Syria," stated the official information from KBRI Damascus on their Instagram account @indonesiaindamascus, Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

The embassy mentioned that the evacuees will stop by Beirut before continuing their flight to Indonesia on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. The group is scheduled to arrive in Jakarta on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Syria, Wajid Fauzi, also bid farewell to the group returning to Indonesia. He expressed wishes for a smooth journey and safe arrival in their homeland.

The Indonesian Embassy in Damascus urges all Indonesian citizens in Syria to stay calm, stay at their respective homes, and keep in touch with the embassy. In case of emergency, people are directed to the embassy’s hotlines: (+963) 954 444 810, (+963) 983 493 426, and (+963) 983 480 264.

Citing Al Jazeera, in the early hours of Sunday, opposition forces declared that Syria had been liberated from Assad’s ruling when opposition forces stormed the capital.

The former Syrian president is reported to have fled Damascus, with no information on which country will accept him.

The collapse of the Assad family's rule, which has lasted for more than 53 years, has been described as a historic moment—nearly 14 years after Syrian citizens held peaceful protests against the government, which responded with violence that quickly turned into a civil war.
