Indonesia's Ex-Diplomat: US Attack on Venezuela Is Law of Jungle

TEMPO.COJakarta - Former Deputy Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Dino Patti Djalal, said that the United States (US)' attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro is a sign that international law has been replaced by the law of the jungle.

In his post on platform X on Saturday as quoted by Antara, he regarded the US action as a reflection of the attitude of a powerful country that feels entitled to act arbitrarily towards other countries, and the world has entered a dangerous order.

"Powerful countries feel entitled to take 'my way or the highway' actions against other countries. This is a sign that we are entering a dangerous world order," he said.

Dino questioned the attitude that would be taken by the international community such as the UN Security Council (UNSC) and Indonesia, which upholds a free and active foreign policy (politik luar negeri bebas aktif or polugri).

"What will the UNSC's stance be? The G7's stance? What about Latin America's stance? What about Indonesia's stance? It's a test for a free and active foreign policy based on principles," he said.

Previously on Saturday, a series of loud explosions were heard in Caracas amid increased tensions with the US.

Videos circulating on social media showed thick smoke and air raid sirens in several places in the Venezuelan capital.

On Truth Social, US President Donald Trump claimed that his forces had launched a military attack on Venezuela and captured Maduro.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged all parties to prioritize a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Venezuela.

"Indonesia calls on all parties involved to prioritize a peaceful resolution through de-escalation steps and dialogue," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on platform X.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasized that international law and the principles of the UN Charter must always be respected by all parties.
