TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Director of Citizen Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, said that there was a threatening act with a machete before the shooting incident of an Indonesian citizen by Malaysian authorities near the waters of Tanjung Rhu, Selangor, Malaysia, on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Judha said the chronology of the shooting incident of the Indonesian citizen in Malaysia is based on a report from the Malaysian Police or Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM).

"The Indonesian citizen attacked using a machete, and then the APMM officers fired shots," said Judha when contacted on Tuesday, January 28.

Before the shooting occurred, the boat carrying the Indonesian citizens reportedly collided with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) patrol boat four times. Besides that, the Indonesians threatened the APMM officers with machetes. In response, APMM personnel fired shots at the Indonesians' boat.

Judha said the Indonesians managed to flee. Their boat was later found stranded by locals on Banting Beach in Selangor. Five male Indonesian nationals were reported to have been shot. One of them, identified as B from Riau Province, was reported dead, while the other four had severe injuries and were taken to the hospital.

“They have received medical treatment.”

At the moment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not received information regarding evidence of machetes seized by the police. "That was reported by the PDRM," he said.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also not received information regarding the APMM personnel involved in the shooting and patrol activities, as an investigation is underway by the Malaysian police.

Tomorrow, the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia plans to meet with the Indonesian nationals to ask clarifications about the incident.

In response to the shooting of Indonesian citizens, Judha said the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia sent a diplomatic note to the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Saturday. The note requested consular access and called for a thorough investigation into the shooting incident.
