TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nezar Patria, the Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Affairs, or Komdigi, stated that the government is preparing regulations for the responsible use of AI. He emphasized the importance of regulations that ensure AI technology benefits society while minimizing potential risks.
Nezar said that the regulations will include principles such as transparency, accountability, and humanity.
"The most important thing is for us not to be afraid of this evolving technology. We want to use AI first and foremost for the benefit of humanity and to ensure that AI remains a product that does not displace or threaten human existence," Nezar said at the AI Literacy Summit Indonesia in Central Jakarta on December 16, as quoted by Antara.
With the rapid development of technology, clear and prudent regulations are needed to ensure that AI provides benefits without negative impacts, such as misuse of data or system errors that could harm users.
Komdigi Ministry’s AI Plans
For some time now, the Komdigi Ministry has shown its commitment to developing regulations for AI technology. The government issued the Minister of Communications and Informatics Circular No. 9 of 2023, which focuses on the ethics and principles of safe and transparent use of AI. The regulation emphasizes the importance of caution when using AI, especially in critical sectors such as finance, healthcare, and education.
The ministry also underlines the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, academia, and the public to create effective and relevant regulations. Nezar stated that Indonesia aims to be an active player in the global AI ecosystem, not just as a consumer of technology, but also as a creator of AI products that can compete on an international scale.
"Collaboration is the key to success in crafting effective and relevant regulations," he said.
With well-developed regulations and policies that support innovation in place, he added, AI’s potential can be maximized without compromising humanity and security. The government is also working on reinforcing digital infrastructure to support the optimal development and use of this technology.
