Indonesia's Stock Market Opens Higher Amid U.S.-Venezuela Tensions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) opened higher on Monday morning, January 5, 2026, despite heightened geopolitical tensions following the United States’ military action in Venezuela.

The benchmark index rose 30.60 points, or 0.35 percent, to 8,778.73 at the opening. The LQ45 index, which tracks 45 of the country’s most liquid stocks, also gained 2.08 points, or 0.24 percent, to 854.08.

Ratna Lim, Head of Research at Phintraco Sekuritas, said the domestic market could still face downside risks if foreign investors increase selling pressure.

However, she noted that rising crude oil and gold prices could support gains in energy and commodity-related stocks.

“IHSG has the potential to be affected by negative sentiment if there is selling pressure from foreign investors. However, if there is an increase in crude oil and gold prices, it is predicted to drive an increase in stock prices in the energy and related commodities sectors,” Ratna said in her analysis in Jakarta on Monday.

From the global front, markets are reacting to escalating political tensions after the United States launched an attack on Venezuela and detained President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The couple is reportedly being taken to New York to face charges related to terrorism and drug trafficking.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would temporarily control Venezuela during a transition of power and announced plans for American companies to enter the country to help improve its oil infrastructure.

Ratna said the worsening geopolitical situation could dominate market sentiment this week, raising concerns that investors may reduce exposure to riskier assets and shift toward safe-haven instruments such as the U.S. dollar and gold.

“On the other hand, market participants will monitor several economic data releases from the United States, including labor market indicators, manufacturing data, and the University of Michigan’s consumer confidence index,” she said.

Domestically, investors are also awaiting key Indonesian economic data scheduled for release this week, including inflation figures, the trade balance, foreign exchange reserves, and consumer confidence indicators.

In the region, major Asian stock markets were mostly higher in early trading.

Japan’s Nikkei index jumped 1,374.02 points, or 2.73 percent, to 51,704.00. China’s Shanghai Composite rose 27.17 points, or 0.68 percent, to 3,995.37, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index edged up 23.03 points, or 0.08 percent, to 26,385.00. Singapore’s Straits Times index gained 24.12 points, or 0.51 percent, to 4,679.02.
