Indonesia Suspends Pork Imports from Spain Over ASF Outbreak

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) has banned the entry of pork and its derivatives from Spain following reports of an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in the country.

"Based on a WOAH report, we have instructed all Barantin technical units and quarantine officers to increase vigilance and tighten supervision of pork and its products from Spain," said Deputy of Animal Quarantine at Barantin, Sriyanto, according to a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.

He explained that WOAH (World Organization for Animal Health) recorded the case as a recurrence of an eradicated disease, referring to the reappearance of ASF that had previously been declared free since 1994 and is currently categorized as an ongoing epidemic.

As a preventive measure to stop ASF from entering Indonesia, Barantin is denying the import of pork and its derivatives from Spain until the country's animal health situation recovers, based on an official WOAH report. "If we find imported pork from Spain, quarantine measures will be taken, including rejection and or destruction," said Sriyanto.

Barantin has also sought support from relevant agencies to disseminate information and educate people at entry and exit points, such as airports, seaports, and border crossings, about the dangers of ASF.

ASF is a highly contagious viral disease among domestic and wild pigs, with a mortality rate that can reach 100 percent.

The disease does not pose a threat to human health, but it has a significant impact on the pig population and could severely disrupt the livestock sector.

The ASF virus is known to be highly resistant in the environment and can survive on clothing, footwear, vehicle tires, and various processed pork products such as ham, sausages, and bacon.

Human mobility and animal commodity traffic are deemed critical in the spread of the disease across regions and countries.

Sriyanto emphasized that the prevention of ASF entry is necessary to protect the national pig farming industry and avoid broader consequential impacts. He urged the public to report suspected non-compliant animal commodity traffic and products to the nearest quarantine officer or via the Barantin WhatsApp Center at 08111920336.
