TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono met with his Thai counterpart, Maris Sangiampongsa, on the sidelines of the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan, Russia, on October 23-24, 2024. The meeting discussed a number of bilateral and regional issues between Indonesia and Thailand.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote in a statement that during the meeting, Sugiono emphasized the strategic importance of the relationship between Indonesia and Thailand. He also pushed for the enhancement of bilateral cooperation between the two countries through various existing mechanisms.
As countries with great potential and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the Southeast Asian region, both foreign ministers agreed on the importance of enhancing regional and global cooperation, including through ASEAN, the UN, BRICS, and other forums.
Regarding ASEAN, Sugiono and Maris agreed on the necessity of a prompt resolution to this problem. Sugiono continued to push for collaborative and inclusive efforts, as well as a specific approach involving all Myanmar stakeholders.
Furthermore, Sugiono also stressed the urgency of ASEAN solidarity and centrality amidst geopolitical dynamics. On the other hand, Maris expressed Thailand's hope that Indonesia, as part of the Troika Plus, can continue to play its role.
Sugiono and Maris exchanged views on BRICS as a strategic forum, especially for emerging economies, to contribute to driving global economic growth.
Next year, Indonesia and Thailand will celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations. Previously, Thailand attended the inauguration of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabumin on Sunday, October 20, represented by its Prime Minister.
