TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia urges Israel to impose an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and stop prohibiting the activities of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) as mandated by the UN General Assembly resolution adopted on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
This was conveyed by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which welcomed the adoption of the two UN General Assembly resolutions on a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and support for UNRWA.
“A permanent ceasefire is urgently needed in Gaza, and the resumed operation of UNRWA will help save Palestinians from suffering,” the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a written statement on social media on Thursday, December 12, 2024, as reported by ANTARA.
Indonesia was one of the proponents of the resolution on the ceasefire in Gaza passed at the 10th Emergency Special Session (ESS) of the UN General Assembly on December 11, according to the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.
The resolution on UNRWA approved by the UN General Assembly also affirmed the global community's support for the agency and condemned the passage of an Israeli law banning UNRWA operations in East Jerusalem, the ministry said.
With the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolutions, Indonesia urges the international community to put pressure on Israel to implement the two resolutions without delay.
“As well as to ensure a lasting ceasefire, the continuation of humanitarian assistance, and pave the way towards the realization of the Two-State Solution,” the Foreign Ministry said.
The UN General Assembly resolution on the ceasefire in Gaza on December 11 again urged all parties to the conflict to realize an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire and the release of hostages held during the conflict.
The resolution submitted by Palestinian representatives at the UN demanding immediate access to essential services and humanitarian assistance for Gaza civilians received 158 votes in favor, nine voted against, and 13 countries abstained.
Meanwhile, a resolution on support for UNRWA activities that emphasizes the importance of humanitarian assistance for the lives of the Palestinian people was supported by 159 votes; nine voted against, and 11 abstained on the same day.
Both resolutions also called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to submit a report on their implementation to the General Assembly within 60 days of their adoption.
