TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister, Sugiono, held bilateral talks with his Uruguayan counterpart, Omar Paganini, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This marks the first meeting between the foreign ministers of both countries.

The bilateral trade value between Indonesia and Uruguay from 2020 to 2022 nearly doubled from US$44.8 million to US$81.5 million. To open up broader economic cooperation opportunities, Indonesia has requested Uruguay's support to expedite the negotiations of the Indonesia-Mercosur Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

"As the host of Mercosur and current President pro tempore of the organization, Uruguay holds a crucial role in realizing Indonesia-Mercosur CEPA,” said Sugiono.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Monday, November 18, 2024, that Sugiono and Paganini also discussed opportunities for cooperation in renewable energy, particularly wind, water, and biomass energy. It was reported that over 90% of Uruguay's electricity is generated from renewable energy, making it a key global player in energy transition issues.

In the food security sector, Indonesia is promoting experts and knowledge exchange in agriculture and livestock sectors with Uruguay, specifically in food estate, rice, and beef, as well as chicken, fish, and dairy products to support national priority programs.

Uruguay is seeking support for halal certification and is ready to supply beef to Indonesia. The two countries have recently agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding on Halal Product Assurance.

"Hopefully, this cooperation will boost the export of high-quality halal beef and lamb from Uruguay to Indonesia and support Indonesia's food resilience," said Foreign Minister Sugiono.

Meanwhile, Indonesia appreciates Uruguay and the Indonesian Honorary Consul in Montevideo for the assistance provided to Indonesian citizens. Every year, 800 - 1000 Indonesians visit Uruguay, the majority of whom work as sailors.
