Indonesian Chess Player Chelsie Monica Wins Qonaev Cup 2024 in Kazakhstan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Monday, November 11, 2024, the Qonaev Cup 2024 Chess Tournament was held at Suleyman Demiral University, Almaty, Kazakhstan. The tournament was attended by 248 chess athletes from various countries, including Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Armenia, Ukraine, Tajikistan, and Azerbaijan. One of the representatives from Indonesia who participated in this tournament is Chelsie Monica.

The Qonaev Cup 2024 tournament featured 9 rounds of Rapid Chess with a time format of 10 minutes + 2 seconds. Indonesian chess athlete, Woman International Master (WIM) Chelsie Monica, managed to clinch the Best Woman title by outperforming the host country's chess players Kazakhstan, Woman Grandmaster Alua Nurman and Woman Grandmaster Liya Kurmangaliyeva.

Chelsie's victory in the Konaev Cup 2024 tournament has made the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, M. Fadjroel Rachman, proud. He expressed pride in the achievement obtained by Chelsie Monica.

"Congratulations and thank you to Chelsie Monica for her hard work in promoting Indonesian sports diplomacy in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The Indonesian Embassy in Astana will continue to support all Indonesian athletes competing in Kazakhstan and Tajikistan," said Fadjroel, as quoted from the Astana Embassy release.

Chelsie Monica also expressed her joy for winning the 1st place in this tournament.

"I'm really happy to win the Best Woman title at the Qonaev Cup 2024 tournament. Besides that, I can bring honor to Indonesia on the international stage," she said.

Profile of Chelsie Monica

Full name Chelsea Monica Ignesias Sihite was born on November 2, 1995 in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. She has been interested in learning chess since she was a child influenced by her father. Since then, she has been involved in chess and has been actively participating in competitions since 2004. Then, as a teenager, in 2013, she won a gold medal in the chess event at the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar paired with Luthfi Ali.

In 2021, Chelsie had to close the 20th Papua National Sports Week with a silver medal in the women's standard chess event. The WIM chess player had to give up the gold medal to Women Grand Master (WGM) Irene Kharisma Sukandar in nine rounds.

"Chelsie managed to win two gold medals in the rapid and blitz individual chess events as these two events are her specialties. Unfortunately, she couldn't replicate the success of the gold when playing in the standard chess event," said the East Kalimantan chess team coach, Yangdi Said, as reported by Antara on October 13, 2021.

Chelsie also won the silver medal in the women's rapid chess event at the 2021 SEA Games in Vietnam against IM Nguyen Pham Le Thao from Vietnam, with a score of - 1 . In the first round, Chelsie achieved a draw. Then, in the second round, she lost on the 38th move in a game using the English opening. Earlier, in the semifinals, Chelsie won against WGM Gong Qianyun from Singapore with a score of 1 - .

The name Chelsie Monica gained popularity in Indonesia after becoming a commentator for the friendly match between WGM Irene and Dadang Subur or Dewa Kipas on March 22, 2021. Through the podcast Close the Door on Deddy Corbuzier's YouTube channel, she revealed that her Instagram followers quickly surged from 2,000 to over 100,000 in a day. Moreover, some people wanted to learn chess thanks to Chelsie's influence.
