TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs responds to the proliferation of unregistered marriage services, better known locally as Nikah Siri (secret mariage), through social media.
Thobib Al Asyhar, the Head of the Public Relations Bureau at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, stated that unregistered marriage services marketed via social media can disrupt social order. This is because the regulations concerning valid marriages are clearly stipulated in Law No. 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage and the Compilation of Islamic Law (KHI).
"The commercialization of unregistered marriage services on social media is a phenomenon that can disrupt the established social order regulated by the law, and it poses serious social, legal, and religious risks," said Thobib when contacted on Monday, November 24, 2025.
Thobib mentioned that in the marriage law, marriage registration is an obligatory administrative duty. According to Thobib, this obligation aims to provide legal certainty for married couples, especially for children born from the marriage. "The Ministry of Religious Affairs does not condone such commercial unregistered marriage services," he said.
He emphasized that the ministry strongly supports law enforcement agencies in taking action against such practices if there is evidence of fraud, abuse of authority, exploitation, or violations of population administration.
Previously, there has been a proliferation of accounts on social media offering unregistered marriage services. These accounts offer unregistered marriage services that are easy, fast, without a building, and without state registration.
One of the TikTok accounts named @jasanikahsirijabodetabek has over 3,000 followers. One of their videos has been viewed more than 264,000 times.
The video shows the atmosphere of the place where people can hold unregistered marriages through their services. There is simple decor such as a small wedding platform adorned with flowers and chairs for the bride, groom, and witnesses.
Furthermore, the account also offers rental of bridal kebaya and event documentation services.
