TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The rupiah exchange rate closed weaker against the U.S. dollar in today's evening trading on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The rupiah exchange rate weakened by 22 points to Rp16,780 per U.S. dollar.

The Director of PT Traze Andalan Futures, Ibrahim Assuaibi, predicted that the rupiah currency would fluctuate and close weaker in tomorrow's trading, ranging from Rp16,780 to Rp16,810 per U.S. dollar.

Ibrahim explained the global and national factors that influenced the weakening of the rupiah in today's evening trading. Regarding external factors, Ibrahim said that the U.S. attack on Venezuela is a key point for the market to watch.

Ibrahim stated that the Caracas government has agreed to supply around 30-50 million barrels of oil to the United States after the military forces of the Big Brother country captured the President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, on January 3, 2026.

From an internal perspective, Ibrahim said the weakening of the rupiah was influenced by predictions from global financial institutions, such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which estimated Indonesia's economic growth at around 5 percent this year. This prediction is lower than the target set by Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, who is optimistic that the economic growth in 2026 can reach 6 percent.

According to Ibrahim, it is not difficult for Indonesia to achieve the 6 percent growth target because the government has already prepared strategies, one of which is to accelerate the budget. Additionally, Ibrahim said that the target growth rate could be achieved thanks to the improving business climate that restores investor confidence.

He added that this happened as the government made efforts to resolve investment or business problems. "Such policies make foreign investors increasingly optimistic about these policy changes," he said.
