Israel Deploys 3,000 Police Ahead of Al Aqsa First Friday Prayer in Ramadan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli police will deploy 3,000 personnel in the occupied East Jerusalem ahead of the first Friday prayer at the Al Aqsa Mosque during the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement on Thursday, March 6, 2025, as reported by Anadolu, the Israeli police said that additional forces will be deployed throughout the city, especially near the junctions and alleys of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Israel estimates that tens of thousands of Palestinian worshipers will attend the Friday prayer at the Al Aqsa Mosque.

Last month, Israel placed its forces on high alert and deployed 3,000 troops along the roads leading to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

Since the start of Ramadan, Israel has restricted the entry of Palestinian worshipers from the West Bank into the Al Aqsa Mosque. Israel only allows Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem and Israeli Arabs to access the site.

Palestine perceives these restrictions as part of Israel's broader policies to Judaize East Jerusalem and erase the Arab and Islamic identity of the Al Aqsa Mosque.

The Al Aqsa Mosque is the third holiest site in the world for Muslims. However, the Jewish refer to the site as the Temple Mount, claiming it to be the site of two ancient Jewish temples.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where the Al Aqsa Mosque is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. They annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move that has never been recognized by the international community.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) declared last July that Israel's long-standing occupation of Palestinian territory is illegal, demanding the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
