TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After stepping down from the Constitutional Court in October 2008, Jimly Asshiddiqie has rarely been without a public post. He has held a range of positions, from member of the Presidential Advisory Council to a member in the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) from 2019 to 2024. On Friday, November 7, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto appointed Jimly as Chair of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission.
The plan to form the commission surfaced following mounting pressure from civil society groups, which took issue with the violence committed by the police in handling demonstrations that spiraled into riots in late August 2025. In that incident, an online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, was killed after being run over by a tactical vehicle of the Police Mobile Brigade.
Before leading the Police Reform Acceleration Commission, Jimly had been actively teaching at several universities. He lectures at the University of Indonesia, the Defense University, and the Military Law College. “I’ve supervised four professors,” he said at his office, the Jimly School of Law and Government, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
In an interview with Tempo reporters Yosea Arga, Friski Riana, Erwan Hermawan, and Stefanus Pramono, along with photographer Tony Hartawan, Jimly detailed his appointment as chair of the commission and outlined the targets he plans to meet in the next three months.
How did you end up being chosen as Chair of the Police Reform Acceleration Commission?
I was contacted shortly after the Gerakan Nurani Bangsa (Nation’s Conscience Movement) met with the President (on September 11, 2025, the movement urged President Prabowo to reform the police). The President asked me to lead the commission.
When did you get confirmation (for the position) from the Palace?
Two days before the inauguration, they contacted me again. “Prof, will you be in Jakarta on Friday?” I said I wasn’t going anywhere. I’m unemployed, after all. I didn’t imagine there would be an inauguration. I thought they simply wanted to talk. So I asked, should I wear batik or something else tomorrow at 4pm. Turns out I had to wear a suit.
