TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - KBS apologizes after causing damage to UNESCO World Heritage Site Byeongsan Seowon during the filming of the drama The First Night With the Duke. The production team of the drama starring SNSD's Seohyun and 2PM's Taecyeon was found to have driven nails into the Mandaeru Pavilion at Historic Site No. 260.
"We deeply apologize for the incident involving damage to cultural property during filming at Byeongsan Seowon in Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do," KBS said as quoted by Allkpop, on Friday, January 3, 2025.
This apology came after a netizen criticized the filming location of KBS's new drama, The First Night With the Duke, which showed nails being driven into Byeongsan Seowon. According to Min Sa Hong, an architect who witnessed the incident and reported it to authorities, the KBS team drove five nails into the pavilion's wooden pillars to hang six lanterns, leaving visible damage to the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
KBS' Clarification and Apology
The head of the drama center and producers have visited Byeongsan Seowon to assess the situation as the responsible parties. They confirmed that new nails were inserted to secure the supports around the 10 existing nail marks, adding stress to the structure.
“The nails were installed at about ten points, including eight beam ends at the Mandaeru Pavilion and two beam ends at Dongjae Hall,” KBS said. “These places have nothing to do with the photos of nail marks at Mandaeru that were reported by some media outlets.”
KBS admitted this was its mistake and apologized. “Even if there were pre-existing nail holes, installing new nails and adding pressure is damage to cultural property. We sincerely apologize for this,” KBS said.
However, KBS also stated that it had received approval from Byeongsan Seowon regarding the locations where the props could be hung, “Before filming, the production team received approval from Byeongsan Seowon regarding the locations where the props could be hung. "The filming was carried out under the supervision of the management," said KBS.
Andong City Hall Statement
Andong City Hall also spoke out about the incident. They confirmed that they had given KBS permission to film at the historic location, but with several conditions.
"The permit requirements explicitly state, 'It is forbidden to install additional buildings and any actions that can damage cultural heritage within the protected area,' and, 'Filming must be carried out in a way that does not affect the safety and preservation of cultural heritage,'" said Andong City Hall.
According to the Andong City Government as quoted by The Korea Times, the nail marks produced were 2 to 3 millimeters thick and about 1 centimeter deep. Under the Cultural Heritage Protection Act, damaging a designated or registered cultural heritage site can result in imprisonment of up to five years or a fine of up to 50 million won.
Byeongsan Seowon as a UNESCO Cultural Heritage Site
Reporting from Visit Korea, Byeongsan Seowon was built in the 17th century and was an educational institution from the Joseon Kingdom (1392–1910). These villages are Historic Sites of Korea and are listed on two UNESCO World Heritage lists; the Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong and the Neo-Confucian Academy of Korea: Seowon.
The Byeongsan Seowon Confucian Academy was first located in Pungsang-hyeon under the name Pungakseodang School. It has been used as an educational institution by the Sarim Party since the Goryeo Dynasty. In 1572, a famous Confucian scholar, Yu Seong Nyong, under the pseudonym Seoae, moved it to its current location in Byeongsan. In 1614, it was renamed Byeongsan Seowon.
In 1863, the king recognized Byeongsan Seowon and received support as a private Confucian academy. During the Japanese occupation, the lecture hall and temple were rebuilt in 1921 and 1937. A collection of 1,000 documents and 3,000 books, including works by Yu Seong Nyong, are housed in this Historic Site.
