TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At CES 2026 this week, the toy production giant LEGO Group unveiled a new 2x4 “smart brick,” introducing what it describes as the most significant evolution of the LEGO system since the Minifigure debuted in 1978.
Announced as part of its new LEGO® SMART Play™ platform, the technology-enabled bricks are designed to work together as an integrated SMART Play system that brings digital interactivity into physical builds.
Company representatives stated the initiative aims to expand how children and families engage with LEGO creations, allowing structures to respond and come to life in new, interactive ways.
LEGO Smart Brick’s Release Date
According to The Verge, LEGO Group announced it will begin selling its new 2x4 Smart Brick on March 1, 2026, marking the commercial rollout of a technology-packed brick.
The brick contains a miniature computer that detects nearby NFC-equipped tiles, minifigures, and other Smart Bricks. LEGO claimed the system will allow entire sets to respond with synchronized lights, sounds, and music, beginning with upcoming LEGO Star Wars releases.
Unlike earlier electronic LEGO toys, the Smart Bricks are wirelessly charged and designed to retain battery performance after years of inactivity, positioning the platform as a long-term addition to the core LEGO system.
“LEGO SMART Play™ is the next exciting chapter in our LEGO System in Play and something we are super excited about being able to bring to the world at this scale,” said Julia Goldin, the company’s chief product and marketing officer, pointing to the brand’s ongoing evolution after more than 90 years of play innovation.
Tom Donaldson, senior vice president and head of Creative Play Lab, added that the platform “brings creativity, technology, and storytelling together… all without a screen,” calling it a new standard for interactive and imaginative play as the system prepares to launch later this year.
LEGO Star Wars-themed
Through its official website, LEGO Group confirmed the first SMART Play sets, scheduled to launch on March 1, 2026, will debut exclusively under the LEGO Star Wars banner, led by Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter, Luke’s Red Five X-Wing, and a Throne Room Duel & A-Wing set.
The LEGO Group revealed its LEGO SMART Play™ All-in-One Star Wars sets will be available for pre-order starting January 9, ahead of a full retail release on March 1 through LEGO.com, LEGO Stores, and select retailers in launch markets.
Company representatives have also emphasized that the products do not include AI or camera technology, relying instead on Smart Bricks and tags.
“This milestone in our long-time collaboration with the LEGO Group adds a new dimension to this legacy,” said Paul Gitter, executive vice president of global brand commercialization at Disney Consumer Products, adding that the initiative extends Star Wars storytelling “through play” by combining technology with creativity.
The company added that the SMART Play platform is designed to evolve over time, with additional updates, new releases, and further technology expansions expected to be announced in the future.
