TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Quick Response Indonesian Standard (QRIS) can now be used in Japan, coinciding with Indonesia's 80th Independence Day on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The use of QRIS in Japan marks the expansion of QRIS beyond ASEAN, following its earlier implementation in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore.
In the initial stage, Indonesian consumers can use QRIS at 35 merchants in Japan by scanning JPQR Global using domestic payment applications. This expansion of QRIS is a collaboration between Bank Indonesia and the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), aimed at providing convenience and transaction efficiency for the public, while also enhancing the economic relationship between Indonesia and Japan.
In the future, the reach of merchants in Japan will expand, making it easier for Indonesian consumers to transact in Japan using QRIS. Additionally, the implementation will also be extended to merchants in Indonesia, allowing Japanese consumers to transact in Indonesia by scanning QRIS using their domestic payment applications.
During the launch, the Governor of Bank Indonesia, Perry Warjiyo, expressed that Indonesia has once again made an important step in the history of the national payment system by expanding innovations that facilitate cross-border transactions.
"Since its launch six years ago, QRIS has been a game changer for the digital payment ecosystem and has strengthened Indonesia's economic sovereignty, now reaching 57 million users," Perry said.
This initiative demonstrates Bank Indonesia's and the Indonesian payment system industry's commitment to expanding the digital payment network internationally.
Together with the People's Bank of China (PBoC), Bank Indonesia has also started conducting trials for the interconnection of QRIS between Indonesia and China. The expansion of QRIS to China is expected to be realized after the entire trial process, ensuring its readiness for smooth operation.
Payment connectivity with China will facilitate more efficient cross-border trade, especially for MSMEs, and drive the growth of the tourism sector in both countries. The trial will involve ASPI, UnionPay International (UPI), and representatives of payment service providers.
Until June 2025, the implementation of Cross-Border QRIS has shown promising results.
Thailand
The collaboration of Cross-Border QRIS with Thailand was launched in August 2022. So far, there have been 994,890 transactions, totaling Rp437.54 billion.
Malaysia
QRIS became operational in Malaysia in May 2023. The volume of transactions for QRIS Indonesia-Malaysia has now reached 4.31 million with a total value of Rp1.15 trillion.
Singapore
The collaboration of Cross-Border QRIS with Singapore began on November 17, 2023. The transactions have recorded 238,216 with a total value of Rp77.06 billion.
Japan
The collaboration of Cross-Border QRIS between Indonesia and Japan began on August 17, 2025. This marks the result of cross-authority synergy between Bank Indonesia with the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI) (including the payment infrastructure provider that is an ASPI member), the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) Japan, Payment Japan Association (PJA), Netstars, and participating financial institutions.
At the Bank Indonesia Board of Governors press conference on April 23, 2025, Deputy Governor Filianingsih stated that the use of QRIS abroad would continue to grow. Some of the countries to collaborate in the implementation of cross-border QR transactions include Japan, China, India, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia.
In a BI presentation document, it was mentioned that Indonesia had signed a memorandum of understanding for QR-based payments with India on July 16, 2022, and with the central bank of South Korea on July 15, 2024. In August 2024, ASPI signed a non-disclosure agreement with the Korean Financial Telecommunication and Clearing Institute. Once the agreement was signed, technical trials for implementing cross-border QR code transactions could begin promptly.
Yusuf Rendy Manilet, a researcher at the Center for Reform on Economics, stated that the trend of payment transactions using QR codes has expanded abroad. In China, the use of QR codes for transactions has reached traditional markets long before the QRIS trend in Indonesia.
Rendy estimated that the trend of cross-border transactions with QR codes will be positive. This is because many Indonesians consider ASEAN countries as tourist destinations. Payment using QR codes makes it easier for them to purchase various goods abroad.
