TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 shook the southern region of West Java, with tremors felt from Sukabumi to Garut. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the tectonic event on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 00:35 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
According to the agency's analysis, the earthquake's epicenter was located at 7.7 degrees South Latitude and 106.91 degrees East Longitude. "It was located at sea, 87 kilometers southwest of Sukabumi City," said Hartanto, the Head of BMKG Region II Tangerang.
Classified as a shallow earthquake with a depth of 20 kilometers, the tremor was caused by underwater fault activity. The impact, based on BMKG's tremor level map and public reports, was felt with an intensity of III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in the Tegalbuleud and Cidolog areas. The shaking was felt as if a truck were passing by.
In other areas, including Pelabuhan Ratu, Cianjur, Garut Regency, Cililin in West Bandung Regency, Cibadak, Jampang Kulon, Pabuaran, Kadupandak, and Cisurupan, the intensity varied from II to III MMI. In these locations, some residents felt the tremors indoors, and light, hanging objects were observed to sway.
The BMKG has reported no building damage as a result of the earthquake. As of 01:04 WIB, there have been no recorded aftershocks. The agency urged the public to remain calm and not to be swayed by unverified rumors.
Previous Lembang Fault Activity
A day earlier, on Thursday, August 14, 2025, a smaller earthquake with a magnitude of 1.8 occurred at 16:13 WIB. This tremor, originating from the Lembang Fault, was felt in Pasir Langu and Jambudipa Villages in Cisarua District, West Bandung Regency, at a depth of 19 kilometers.
"This was a shallow crustal earthquake triggered by the Lembang Fault Cimeta Segment," explained Daryono, the Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis at BMKG.
Daryono also recalled a destructive earthquake on August 28, 2011, which was also caused by the Lembang Fault Cimeta Segment. This stronger earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.3, damaged 103 houses in Kampung Muril Rahayu, Jambudipa Village, Cisarua District, West Bandung.
"The activity of the earthquake this afternoon is evidence that the Lembang Fault is an active fault that should be monitored with caution," Daryono concluded.
