TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysia has allowed residents in Kelantan interested in panning for gold to apply for permits at the National Land and Mines Office and district land offices starting Thursday, January 1, 2026.
Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr. Mohamed Fadzli Hassan stated that applications will be processed and approved within a set timeframe. Issued permits must comply with government requirements.
"There is currently no cap on the number of applications and manual forms are available at the state or district land offices," Mohamed Fadzli said, as reported by Bernama after the State Executive Council meeting at the Kota Darulnaim Complex here last Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
He mentioned that social media responses suggest many will apply for these mining permits. Mohamed added that the Land Office is prepared to manage the application process.
Mohamed Fadzli stated that gold buyers must obtain state government approval for transactions involving the precious metal. He said the Land Office will soon announce official mining areas in four identified districts: Gua Musang, Jeli, Tanah Merah, and Kuala Krai. Other areas with resource potential will be identified and evaluated over time.
He noted that only Kelantan residents using manual panning methods are eligible. The activity is restricted to designated areas and must take place during working hours.
