TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairperson of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), will attend and speak at the World Leaders Summit on Children's Rights at the Vatican on Monday, February 3. She arrived in Rome, Italy, on Friday evening, January 31, local time.
Megawati, the fifth president of Indonesia, will serve as a panelist and share her commitment to humanitarian issues, with a special focus on children's rights. The daughter of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno, will also judge the Zayed Award at the forum, which will be attended by Pope Francis.
"Megawati will deliver a message focused on humanitarian concerns. Her insights, along with those of other panelists, are crucial in advocating for children's rights," Ahmad Basarah, a member of the PDI-P's central executive committee, said in a written statement on Saturday, February 1.
The global summit aims to shed light on children's issues. Its goals have been developed in collaboration with governments, UN agencies including WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, UNESCO, UNDP, and IBRD, and numerous NGOs.
Key issues on this year's agenda include children’s health, nutrition, the role of women, maternal health, family planning, the role of the family, primary education, literacy, children in vulnerable situations, protection in armed conflict, environmental impact, poverty reduction, and economic revitalization.
In 1996, six years after the first summit, then-UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali reported to the General Assembly that significant progress had been made worldwide in improving children's health, nutrition, education, and protection—the primary goals of the World Summit for Children.
According to Vaticannews.va, the 2025 World Summit on Children’s Rights is a response to the increasing educational challenges faced by millions of children. A UNICEF study warns that the world is entering a new crisis for children, as climate change, inequality, and conflicts disrupt their lives and limit their future prospects.
Pope Francis echoed this concern in his January prayer intention, calling it an "educational catastrophe. He emphasized that all children and young people have the right to education, yet some 250 million children are denied an education because of war, migration, and poverty.
The UNICEF report highlights that 64 million children of primary school age are out of school, and one in three children under five suffers from severe food poverty. In 2022, 12 million girls will be forced into early marriage. Pope Francis has announced his commitment to dedicate a day at the World Summit to address these critical issues.
"And to protect the millions of children who remain without rights, who live in precarious conditions, who are exploited and abused, and who suffer the harsh effects of war," he said.
