TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government under Prabowo’s presidency prepared Rp71 trillion to support his flagship program, the free nutritious meal program, with 20 percent, or Rp14 trillion, allotted for fresh milk procurement.
However, according to the Minister of Cooperatives, Budi Arie Setiadi, the amalgamation of dairy cooperatives across Indonesia is only able to provide milk with an aggregate value of Rp1.5 trillion thus far. This figure is far below the required milk to run the program smoothly.
"This means we will certainly absorb the products of dairy cooperatives since the shortage is significant," said Budi Arie in a press conference on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Therefore, Budi Arie said, upon a discussion with the National Nutrition Agency, the government will seek alternative proteins besides milk. He also mentioned that the government will take innovative steps to meet the milk requirements.
The Ministry of Cooperatives will focus on improving the productivity of dairy cooperatives in Indonesia, which amounted to 59 cooperatives with nearly 200,000 cows. From these local breeders, the average milk production is currently only able to reach 12–18 liters per day.
Budi Arie admitted to consulting with several livestock experts to up the number to 20 liters per day. One of the aspects that need improvement in local farming is their feed. With sufficient feed, Budi Arie said, milk productivity will grow.
The Free Nutritious Meal program will commence on January 2, 2025. The Expert Staff of the National Nutrition Agency, Ikeu Tanziha, also mentioned that the program will target approximately 15 to 20 million children at 82 locations nationwide in its initial stage.
