TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa responded to the recent United States attack on Venezuela. According to him, the operation and the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by the US military raise serious questions about international law.
He shared these views upon arriving at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta for a high-level meeting with President Prabowo Subianto.
"World law is somewhat peculiar now," Purbaya remarked. He noted that the attack proves a nation can strike a sovereign country and seemingly avoid oversight.
To Purbaya, this is a clear sign that the United Nations is losing its influence. "So, the UN is weakening now," he stated.
Despite these legal concerns, Purbaya believes the economic impact of the attack will remain limited. He pointed out that Venezuela has not been a major player in the global oil market for years due to the country's limited production capacity and long-term instability. Because of this, he predicts that Indonesia will not suffer negative financial consequences.
In fact, Purbaya noted that global oil prices and the Indonesian stock market have stayed stable since the attack. However, he warned that Indonesia must remain strong and alert. The country needs to stay prepared, given the dynamic global political situation.
On Monday afternoon, President Prabowo Subianto held a meeting with his top economic team. Attendees included Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia. Investment Minister Rosan Perkasa Roeslani was also present.
While the meeting agenda was private, the ministers spoke to the press about the Venezuela crisis afterward. "The issue is still being monitored because the main thing is its impact on oil prices," Airlangga said.
Airlangga confirmed that the US military action has not yet hit Indonesian fuel prices. He observed that oil markets have stayed relatively calm over the last 48 hours. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the sudden change in the Venezuelan government will affect existing business deals. "Certainly, there will be changes due to the change in government," Airlangga concluded.
