TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communications and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid conveyed the need to meet with Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti to discuss coding and artificial intelligence (AI) modules in the upcoming curriculum. Meutya admitted that there had been preliminary discussions with Abdul Mu'ti regarding participation in curriculum development.
"We agree with what has been conveyed. We have agreed to have a coding-related curriculum. Whether the modules will be created together with Kemkomdigi as we have been doing or how it will be done still needs to be discussed. We have not met again since that time," she said when we met at The Tribrata Darmawangsa, Jakarta, on Thursday, November 14, 2024. She also asked to ask Mendikdasmen directly about the matter.
Earlier, Minister Abdul Mu'ti said that the merger of Coding and AI subjects will be implemented in the next academic year. "It will be implemented from the 2025/2026 academic year as an elective subject," Mu'ti said when contacted via WhatsApp on Thursday, November 14, 2024.
Mu'ti explained that the technology-based subject would start from the fourth grade of primary school. "Depending on the capabilities of the school and the students," he added.
The Ministry of Education and Culture is currently studying the teaching models and materials of the schools that have implemented the. Regarding the limited access to technology such as laptops as one of the supporting facilities, Mu'ti has not yet provided a solution. However, he said that the subject is not compulsory. "Those who are ready will implement it."
Mu'ti hopes that by implementing the subject at an early stage, Indonesian children can be equipped with digital skills and intelligence.
Abdul Mu'ti's move to include coding and AI as subjects for elementary school students is an adaptation of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka's suggestion. "Let's not be left behind by India. Because once again, ladies and gentlemen, to achieve our golden Indonesia, we need a golden generation. We want more experts in coding, AI, machine learning, and others," Gibran said during a coordination meeting for the evaluation of primary and secondary education in Gandaria district, South Jakarta, on Monday, November 11, 2024.
