TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The eruption of Mount Semeru on the border of Lumajang Regency, East Java, is still ongoing until Wednesday morning, January 8, 2025, as observed by officers from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).

Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer Mukdas Sofian revealed that at 02:47 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) the volcano ejected volcanic ash approximately 1 kilometer high from the peak. "Recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 165 seconds," said Mukdas as quoted by Antara, Wednesday.

The Geological Agency noted that the eruption was the 14th and also the largest activity of Mount Semeru in at least the last 24 hours. Approximately three hours earlier, the Mount Semeru observation post team recorded an eruption activity with a volcanic ejection height of 600 meters above the peak or 4,276 meters above sea level.

Mount Semeru, which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level, is still on alert status, so the Geological Agency has issued a number of recommendations, namely that the public is prohibited from carrying out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan as far as 8 kilometers from the peak or center of the eruption.

Outside this distance, the public is not allowed to carry out activities within a distance of 500 meters from the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be hit by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 13 kilometers from the peak. The public is also not allowed to carry out activities within a radius of 3 kilometers from the crater or peak of Mount Semeru because it is prone to the danger of ejection of incandescent rocks.

In addition, the public also needs to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava avalanches, and cold lava due to rain along rivers or valleys that originate at the peak of Mount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lava in small rivers that are tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.
