TEMPO.CO, JakartaRaja Ampat in Southwest Papua has been included in the list of 25 best places in the world to travel in 2025 by National Geographic. The magazine released the list on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.

The list offers a perfect starting point for travel inspiration, catering to a wide range of interests, from food lovers to adventure seekers and families. This list is based on insights and expertise from National Geographic's travel experts and editors, including up-and-coming and perennial destinations.

"I like to think of ‘Best of the World’ as National Geographic’s annual invitation to get out and explore for yourself the incredible diversity of places and experiences around the world," said Nathan Lump, Editor-in-Chief of National Geographic, in a statement.

The Underwater Beauty of Raja Ampat

Located at the northwestern tip of the Bird's Head Peninsula in Papua, Raja Ampat is an archipelago consisting of more than 1,500 small islands, coral islands, and sandbanks surrounding the four main islands of Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, and Misool. The Raja Ampat Geopark was designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) on May 24, 2023.

The name Raja Ampat is believed to come from a legend where a woman found seven eggs, with four of them hatching into kings of the four main islands, while the other three became a woman, a ghost, and a stone.

Raja Ampat is vast, covering 9.8 million hectares of land and ocean, home to 540 coral species, over 1,000 fish species, and 700 mollusk species.

According to a report developed by The Nature Conservancy and Conservation International, approximately 75 percent of the world's species live here. The abundance and diversity of marine life in Raja Ampat are extensive, as are its pristine coral reef systems.
