TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution has officially declared a state of disaster emergency after floods and landslides struck 14 regencies and cities across the province, spanning from Medan and Binjai to Deli Serdang and South Nias.

Temporary data indicates the disaster has resulted in 30 fatalities and the displacement of more than 4,000 residents. Several areas remain isolated due to completely severed road access.

Governor Nasution stated that the local government's immediate priorities are search and rescue (SAR) operations, emergency services, and the reopening of critical transportation routes.

Logistic aid has been successfully distributed to most areas, but the governor noted that Tapanuli Tengah and Sibolga are still inaccessible by land.

"Aid has been delivered by land route; it's just Tapanuli Tengah and Sibolga that we haven't been able to reach because access is still completely severed," Bobby said during a disaster management coordination meeting with Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Pratikno, on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

To reach these two isolated areas, the provincial government is coordinating with the military and has deployed two helicopters.

In addition to the air deployment, the North Sumatra government has mobilized a multi-sector Rapid Response Team, established field posts and evacuation centers, and rallied support from state-owned and regional-owned enterprises, as well as various stakeholders.

Erwin Hotmansah Harahap, Head of the North Sumatra Communication and Informatics Agency, confirmed efforts are underway to restore communication networks that have failed in several locations. "We are working to resolve it," he said.

The Provincial Government previously dispatched personnel and evacuation equipment, including rubber boats, generators, evacuation tents, Starlink communication devices, chainsaws, and 42 lantern units.

The North Sumatra Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) also distributed aid packages worth Rp60 million. Additional logistic supplies, including 1 ton of cooking oil, 500 kilograms of sugar, 20,000 instant noodle packages, and 1,000 cans of sardines, have also been sent.

Coordinating Minister Pratikno reinforced the central government's commitment, emphasizing that the emergency response in North Sumatra, Aceh, and West Sumatra is a priority.

"Pak Prabowo instructed us to seriously handle emergency response to disasters and prepare post-emergency plans because infrastructure needs to be restored promptly," said Pratikno.
