TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Over 100 foreign nationals were executed by Saudi Arabia in 2024, as reported by Middle East Eye.
On Saturday, the official Saudi Press Agency reported the execution of a Yemeni national who was convicted of smuggling drugs into the kingdom.
According to government media reports, the number of foreign nationals executed so far in 2024 stands at 101, nearly triple the figures in 2023 and 2022.
"This is the largest number of executions of foreigners in one year. Saudi Arabia has never executed 100 foreigners in a year," said Taha al-Hajji, legal director for the Berlin-based European-Saudi Organisation for Human Rights (ESOHR).
The foreigners executed this year include 21 from Pakistan; 20 from Yemen; 14 from Syria; 10 from Nigeria; nine from Egypt; eight from Jordan; seven from Ethiopia; three each from Sudan, India, and Afghanistan; and one each from Sri Lanka, Eritrea, and the Philippines.
Human rights defenders and Saudi lawyers accuse Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman of overseeing a crackdown on freedom of expression since taking power. This includes the enforcement of counterterrorism laws criticized by Human Rights Watch for their broad definition of terrorism.
In 2022, Saudi Arabia ended a three-year moratorium on drug offender executions. In 2024, 92 drug-related executions have been carried out thus far.
Saudi Arabia remains one of the countries with the highest number of executions in the world. At least 1,115 executions have been carried out under the bin Salman government between June 21, 2017, and October 9, 2024.
Additionally, according to Reprieve, Saudi Arabia has repeatedly lied to the United Nations about death penalty implementation.
