TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned oil firm Pertamina`s upstream subsidiary, PT Pertamina EP (PEP), has discovered a new oil well in its Adera Field. This well shows a production potential of up to 3,442 barrels of oil per day (BOPD). The discovery comes from the ABB-143 (U1) well, which teams tested on December 30, 2025.
"The ABB-143 (U1) well is expected to increase production by approximately 458 barrels of oil per day under certain operating conditions, with an estimated total oil recovery potential of approximately 750,000 barrels," said Djudjuwanto, General Manager of Pertamina EP Zone 4, in a written statement on Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
Initial flow testing lasted for two hours on the day of the discovery. Between 2:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), the well showed a natural flow rate of 3,442 BOPD. Remarkably, the well did not need any lifting equipment to reach this rate. This testing phase represents stable flow conditions.
Djudjuwanto stated that this test data is vital for reservoir management to maintain production over a long period. The initial test determines the well's maximum capacity to flow oil naturally. These results are an initial baseline for assessing well performance and reservoir characteristics.
After the cleanup phase, PEP Adera Field started a "multi-rate test." This step helps find the best production rate. It also measures the gas-to-oil ratio (GOR) and water content. Djudjuwanto explained that they reached these estimates by comparing the new well with older ones in the same area.
According to him, the successful drilling resulted from 3D seismic data collected in 2023. A team of experts in geology, geophysics, and production analyzed this data.
"Through detailed seismic analysis, the team was able to map the direction of the reservoir, increasing the chances of success," Djudjuwanto said.
This discovery is a key part of the Adera Field project for 2026. It supports the national goal to produce 1 million barrels of oil per day. PEP continues to use new technology to improve performance. "Innovation and new approaches continue to drive PEP's performance in strengthening national energy security," Djudjuwanto added.
The operational area for PEP Adera Field is in South Sumatra Province. It covers Muara Enim and Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir. The project also includes the North West Benuang Area near Prabumulih. Adera Field is part of Zone 4 of Pertamina Hulu Rokan in the Sumatra Region.
