Police Nab Boat Passsenger with 200 Grams of Marijuana in Sorong

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The West Papua Police Narcotics Investigation Directorate arrested a boat passenger caught carrying marijuana at Sorong Port on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. The boat, KM Sinabung, was coming from Jayapura, Papua.

The director of the West Papua Police Narcotics Investigation, Comsr. Japerson Parningotan Sinaga, said the arrest was led by the head of Team 3, Ins. Said Muhammad Akbar Al Hamid. "Based on the information, Team 3 Operational of the West Papua Police Narcotics Investigation Directorate conducted an investigation and surveillance of the suspect," he said in a written statement quoted on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

The arrested passenger with the initials JDM, aged 19, is a resident of Sorong. He was arrested at 08:30 local time as he disembarked from the KM Sinabung boat. During the search, police found 13 large transparent plastic bags suspected to contain 200 grams of marijuana in his backpack.

The police also confiscated a cell phone used by JDM to communicate with the dealer in Jayapura. "The officers then took JDM and the evidence to the West Papua Police Team 3 Post for further processing and interrogation for further development," Japerson said.

Police are still developing the investigation to uncover the drug distribution network in the West Papua region.
