TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto departed for Cairo, Egypt, from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport to attend the D-8 Summit on December 17, 2024.
This visit marks the first in 11 years for an Indonesian president to visit the Middle Eastern nation since 2013.
"Egypt is our close friend, a strategic partner for Indonesia, and an important country in the Middle East. I will conduct a bilateral meeting with Egypt's President, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi," said Prabowo at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base.
Subsequently, Prabowo will attend the D-8 Summit. D-8, or Developing-8, is an organization for development cooperation among eight developing countries established in 1997. Its members consist of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Turkey, and Pakistan.
Prabowo said the D-8 Summit is significant, especially since Indonesia will assume leadership starting January 1 next year. “Hence, I will attend the summit. And after, I will hold informal meetings with several economic and industry figures,” he said.
The president said he will also stop by Malaysia to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The presidential aircraft took off from Halim Perdanakusuma at 11:35 a.m. local time. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka and several ministers, as well as National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and TNI Commander Agus Subiyanto, saw the president off at the airport.
Previously, the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roy Soemirat, said President Prabowo Subianto would attend the D-8 Summit in Cairo on Tuesday, December 17, until Thursday, December 19. There, Prabowo will receive the D-8 chairmanship for Indonesia starting January 1, 2026.
A key objective of this summit is the official handover of the D-8 chairmanship from Egypt to Indonesia, with Indonesia assuming the role for the 2026-2027 period, effective January 1, 2026.
“This D-8 Summit holds significant importance as it not only serves as a regular meeting of the D-8 organization but also marks the transition of the chairmanship from Egypt to Indonesia,” Roy said during a press conference at the Ministry's office in Central Jakarta on Monday, December 16, 2024.
