TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto departed for Washington, DC, United States, after completing a bilateral visit in Beijing, China. One of the objectives of his stop in the U.S. is to discuss the finalization of the Critical Mineral Agreement.
Indonesia, through its former president Joko Widodo, has established a nickel-focused deal in November 2023 with U.S. President Joe Biden. At the time, the American government still had concerns about environmental, social, and governance standards in Indonesia.
The Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Susiwijono Moegiarso, said Donald Trump’s recent electoral victory will certainly make changes to the bilateral agreement between the U.S. and Indonesia. Susiwijono said his side will work to finalize the trade deal, which will allow Indonesia to supply minerals for electric vehicle batteries in the United States.
"The transition to President Trump’s government will bring a few changes. But, the point is, exporting some of our critical minerals to U.S. and European markets will require special regulation that must be discussed in detail later,” he said on Monday, November 11, 2024.
To achieve this, Susiwijono will negotiate with the U.S. government before Trump takes office next year on January 20.
Prabowo is also scheduled to meet Joe Biden at the APEC Summit in Peru and the G20 Summit in Brazil.
"We will bring some economic policies that have been negotiated bilaterally at the G20 forum with twenty of the world’s largest economies,” he said.
President Prabowo previously arrived at Andrews Air Force Base, Washington, DC, United States, on Sunday, November 10, around 4:00 p.m. local time.
He landed in the United States after a working visit to China and a meeting with President Xi Jinping.
Prabowo's arrival was welcomed by U.S. Acting Chief of Protocol Ethan Rosenzweig; U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir; and the Charge d'Affaires of the Indonesian Embassy in Washington, DC, Ida Bagus Made Bimantara.
Prabowo visited the U.S. to fulfill an honorary invitation from the country. In addition to meeting with US President Joe Biden, Prabowo also has the opportunity to meet with the winner of the US Presidential Election, Donald Trump.
White House Spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre said in a written statement that U.S. President Joe Biden will host President Prabowo Subianto in a bilateral meeting at the White House on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, local time. Prabowo's working visit to the U.S. coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Indonesia.
