TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto has urged members of his cabinet to take greater initiative in decision-making, stressing that effective leadership requires courage and an understanding of broader policy goals rather than waiting for direct instructions.
Speaking during a cabinet retreat at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Prabowo said officials in the Red and White Cabinet had shown strong initiative in carrying out their duties.
“You have worked with full initiative, understanding, and courage, because making decisions and taking initiative requires courage,” Prabowo said.
He noted that government officials could choose the easier path of inaction by waiting for explicit orders, but warned that such an approach undermines leadership. Instead, Prabowo emphasized the importance of grasping the government’s overarching strategy.
“Understanding the objectives and the leader’s directives means understanding the grand direction or general guidance. Not every decision should wait for orders from superiors,” he said.
The former defense minister also expressed appreciation for his cabinet, saying ministers and agency heads had delivered measurable results on the ground.
“As the recipient of the mandate from the Indonesian people, as the helmsman, I want to express my gratitude to my assistants,” said Prabowo, who also chairs the Gerindra Party.
The retreat was attended by coordinating ministers, ministers, deputy ministers, and heads of government agencies. Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka was also present and seated beside the president.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said the retreat focused on evaluating the implementation of key government programs, including the Free Nutritious Meal program (MBG) and food self-sufficiency.
“All ministries will be evaluated, including listening to progress reports on how these programs have been implemented over the past year,” Prasetyo said.
He added that the meeting would also address challenges faced by ministries and institutions under the Prabowo administration.
“This is an evaluation. If there are still obstacles, they will certainly be discussed during today’s retreat,” he said.
According to Prasetyo, other topics on the agenda include energy self-sufficiency, progress on downstream industrialization, and discussions related to Danantara. He noted that the retreat did not have a fixed time limit, allowing for in-depth deliberations.
