TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Preacher Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman, also known as Gus Miftah, announced his resignation as the Special Presidential Envoy for Religious Harmony and Religious Facility Development.
Miftah made this announcement during a press conference held at his residence, Ora Aji Boarding School in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Friday afternoon, December 6, 2024.
“Today, with all humility and sincerity, and with a deep sense of awareness, I’d like to convey a decision that I have deeply contemplated after prayers, reflection, and seeking guidance,” said Miftah.
Miftah subsequently stated that he had decided to step down from President Prabowo Subianto's Cabinet.
“I have decided to resign from my position as the Special Presidential Envoy for Religious Harmony and Religious Facility Development,” he declared.
Miftah emphasized that his decision to resign was not influenced by any external pressure or made at the behest of others.
“I have made this decision to resign out of deep love, respect, and a sense of responsibility towards President Prabowo Subianto and the entire Indonesian society,” he stated with a hint of emotion.
According to him, this decision does not signify an end or a retreat but rather marks a new beginning to contribute to the nation and country in a broader and more diverse capacity.
Miftah then quoted a story. “A noble-hearted individual once remarked, if a position is merely a temporary trust, as it serves as a means to do good,” he said.
Therefore, he asserted that as a preacher and servant of the people, his dedication to the nation and country is not limited to just one position and status alone. “But rather encompasses all avenues through which I can contribute positively,” he said.
Miftah's resignation follows the recent circulation of several offensive remarks he made.
Following sharp public criticism for a video where he insulted a tea seller while delivering a sermon in Magelang, an older video resurfaced, showcasing Miftah belittling senior comedian Yati Pesek.
This older video captures him lecturing during a shadow puppet show featuring puppeteer Ki Warseno, a renowned artist from Yogyakarta. The female vocalist in the shadow puppet performance was the esteemed senior artist, Yati Pesek.
In this video, before a live audience, Miftah engaged in conversation with the senior actress, intending to provide humorous commentary after Yati Pesek performed the Javanese song, 'Bajing Loncat'. However, instead of eliciting laughter, Miftah's words were disrespectful and derogatory towards Yati Pesek. This video once again ignited a wave of criticism from internet users directed towards Miftah.
