TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said the 4-day work week proposal requires re-evaluation, as it's intended to reduce pollution and traffic congestion.
"The proposal must be reviewed, or re-evaluated," said Djarot when met after the Bandeng Rawa Belong Festival in Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
According to Djarot, not all professions could implement the 4-day workweek system, including healthcare workers, firefighters, and journalists. Therefore, if the proposal is pursued, the Jakarta Provincial Government must categorize its implementation.
The goal is to ensure that public services are not disrupted. "It needs to be sorted out, to identify which professions need to have a physical presence, where the people must be on-site to provide services to the community," said the PDIP chief.
The head of the transition team for the elected Governor and Deputy Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung-Rano Karno, Ima Mahdiah, said the proposal for a four-day work week in Jakarta did not come from the transition team, but rather from an urban planning expert, Nirwono Joga. This was said during a discussion with the PDIP faction at the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD).
"We in the Pramono-Rano transition team have never discussed or proposed a 4-day workweek policy," said Ima on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, as quoted from a written statement.
According to Ima, the proposal should be an academic idea intended to be considered by the Jakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) and the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. It is because the transition team also has its agenda, to ensure the smooth transition of leadership and execute priority programs once Pramono Anung and Rano Karno are sworn in as Governor and Deputy Governor of Jakarta.
"Our priority programs cover urgent issues such as flood management, public transportation, and improving public service quality," she said.
However, Ima appreciates Nirwono's opinion, that this 4-day work week proposal has been implemented in several developed countries to improve public mental health and productivity.
The idea could be subject to further in-depth discussion between the DPRD and the local government going forward, she said, albeit admitting that it was not part of the main agenda to consider by Pramono’s team.
“I consider the suggestion worth discussing further by stakeholders, but of course, it will require a comprehensive review and consideration of the context of Jakarta,” said Ima
