TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) has called on Indonesia to be vigilant against China's efforts related to Taiwan's status, which they say are undermining regional peace. TETO also asked the Indonesian government to jointly maintain security and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region.

"Taiwan asks the Indonesian government and all levels of society to confront China's malicious attempts to misinterpret UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and equate it with the One China Principle," said TETO Head John Chen in a written statement, Friday, December 20, 2024.

In a joint statement between Indonesia and China, Indonesia reaffirmed its consistent commitment to the One China Principle in UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and recognized the People's Republic of China (PRC) as the sole legitimate government representing all of China and Taiwan as an inseparable part of China.

"TETO in Indonesia expresses strong protest against this error," he said.

Chen explained that the Republic of China or Taiwan is a sovereign and independent country founded in 1912 and is not affiliated with the People's Republic of China founded in 1949. He said that Taiwan's democratically elected government can represent Taiwan's 23.5 million people internationally.

Chen explained that Beijing has never ruled Taiwan so Taiwan is not part of China. This condition has an impact on the current status quo of the Taiwan Strait. Any statement that distorts Taiwan's sovereign status cannot change the objective facts that are recognized internationally.

Chen explained that Resolution 2758 passed by the UN General Assembly in 1971 only determines the attribution of China's representatives at the UN and never mentions that Taiwan is part of the People's Republic of China.

According to Chen, China unilaterally uses the misinterpretation of Resolution 2758 of the UN General Assembly as the "One China Principle". China is considered wrong in claiming that the resolution politically, legally and procedurally resolves the issue of Taiwan's representatives at the UN which is part of the People's Republic of China, where this is completely inconsistent with historical facts.

In recent years, China has often misinterpreted the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 and inappropriately linked it to the “One China Principle”. According to Chen, China aims to use the resolution as a weapon and spread the idea of the “One China Principle” to force other countries to accept China’s political claims, alienate relations with Taiwan, undermine the international order, and establish a legal basis for the use of force to attack Taiwan in the future.

Chen assessed that the Indonesia-China joint statement mentioned the One China Principle and misinterpreted Taiwan’s sovereignty. This statement, Chen continued, is contrary to the current trend where countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are increasing their exchanges with Taiwan.
